We know that boarding can seem quite daunting if it will mean that the family will be separated for long periods of time, especially if different time zones make it tricky to speak to each other.

We find it helps enormously for parents to be able to picture their son at school and to know who will be looking after him. Before a full boarder joins the school, we ensure that the family have toured the school, spent time in their son's dormitory, met their son's teachers and spent a good while getting to know the boarding staff especially.

The boarders have access to email, Skype and Facetime, and they may use mobile phones to contact their parents at a convenient time. We know that boys are not always the best communicators and are often "too busy" to call home, so we ensure that they do! We host several social events during the year for boarders' parents, and we make sure that they are included in communications sent out by the school, so that they can feel part of the community even when they are far away.

Escorted Travel

We are very happy to help coordinate the travel for boarders at weekends, exeats, half terms and ends of terms. We can help with the organisation of tickets and passports and can arrange escorted transport to and from airports or railway stations.

Transport links

Winchester railway station is within easy walking distance, with a taxi rank outside the station and several reliable taxi companies used regularly by the school. There are four direct trains each hour to London Waterloo. The journey time is less than one hour.

Southampton and Bournemouth are the nearest airports, 15 minutes and 40 minutes away respectively by car. Heathrow is approximately one hour away by car and is also served by National Express coaches from Winchester (it is a long journey by coach, however).

Guardians

Overseas boarders and boarders whose parents live some distance away in the UK are required to have a guardian.

Overseas boarders

Please see our overseas student policy for further details about joining the school from abroad.
