Book Club, Summer 1

We hope all boys enjoyed a refreshing break and had plenty of opportunities to read and enjoy new and much loved stories. At the end of last term the books selected for our first Book Club of the Summer Term were included in the newsletter as follows:

Seniors (Year 6 to 8)

Dogs of the Deadlands by Anthony McGowan
A story about survival and resilience based set in the aftermath of the Chernobyl's nuclear accident.

Junior (Years 3 to 5)

The Glorious Race of Magical Beasts by Alex Bell
Mythology, adventure and a librarian as the hero. What more?

Junior Plus (Year 3 only)

For those in Year 3 who prefer a different kind of fantastic story, here's a classic read: Ottoline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell.
This is a modern classic, which is worth discovering. Full of beautiful illustrations, humour and splendid fantastic creatures created by former Children's Laureate, Chris Riddell.

We can now confirm the dates for the Cake Breaks, during which pupils will be able to discuss with their friends what they liked - or didn't - about these books. There is still some time to complete the books before the Cake Breaks, and it would be lovely to see many boys participating. For the first time, we shall have a prize at the end of the year which will be awarded to the pupil who has most consistently attended and contributed to the Cake Break conversations.

Cake Breaks will take place as follows:

  • Tuesday 7 May: Seniors
  • Thursday 9 May: Year 3 (plus)
  • Friday 10 May: Juniors
