When should my son join Pilgrims'?

The main points for entry to the school are Reception (4+), Years 3 and 4 (8+/9+). Boys sometimes join other year groups, and at various times in the year, subject to places being available.

A good number of boys regularly join us in the senior years (11+). This is usually for preparation relative to scholarships and the ISEB and Common Entrance examinations, for boarding experience, and for specialist preparation for Winchester College’s own entry examination.

When do choral scholars join?

Choral scholars, the trebles for Winchester Cathedral Choir and for Winchester College Chapel Choir, join in Year 4 and Year 5.

What is a taster day?

Entry to the school is by a taster day, which includes our entry tests as well as plenty of time to get to know the school. This can be arranged most Tuesdays, by appointment, throughout the year. When possible, we meet with parents before they collect their son, to chat through the day. Offers are made in writing soon after the taster day, and the place is confirmed upon receipt of a completed contract, acceptance deposit, and confidential report from the current school (if applicable). Find out more about taster days here.

When can my son start boarding?

Boarding at The Pilgrims’ School is an ideal opportunity for your son to gain experience of boarding in a small, nurturing environment before becoming a boarder at his much larger senior school. Our boarding starts from Year 4, which is also the main entry point for the Choristers, the choral scholars for Winchester Cathedral Choir.

Boarding is very popular and generally oversubscribed, with a waiting list. Early registration is strongly advised. Find out more about boarding here
