Taking Pride

As the final days of term approach - sun hats slightly askew, lost property overflowing with odd socks, and many of us (staff and parents included) running on reserves of willpower and coffee – the concept of ‘pride’ is on my mind.
For, it is a time to instinctively look back at the year past, and there is much to be proud of. However, when it comes to pride, there are of course two kinds: the kind we’re rightly cautioned against… the haughty type that elevates self above others, blinkers us to our shortcomings, or masks insecurity with bravado. That kind of pride we work hard against, for it has no place in a community that pursues the values of respect, integrity and heart. But there is the other kind – which is deeper, warmer, more enduring - that deserves celebration.
It’s the kind of pride you feel when watching a boy (perhaps your son) stand, trembling slightly, bow in hand, in the Junior Inter-Set Solo Competition and play his heart out. (Which many of us did just yesterday. Any proud parent reaching ‘watery eye stage’ able to take solace in the fact it’s the season of allergies!) It’s the kind of pride sparked by stepping into P & G Wells - our local independent bookshop just across the road - where, now and in the hours ahead, the boys’ Art and Design work is exhibited. These are pieces that speak of hours of exploration and iteration, creativity and, sometimes, a good deal of mess in the process. Seeing their work displayed in a public space - valued and visible – is, we hope, a special moment of pride for many of our boys.
These last weeks of term offer countless moments like these: from musical performances and Year 4 drama productions, to matches played with heart and trips filled with fun and discovery. Each is a small episode of effort and growth - and together, they help form the tapestry of a term in full. Commensurately, it is right to express my pride not just in the boys, but in the staff who guide, support and help inspire them every day. The team shows extraordinary dedication and care and, after many exams to mark and reports to write, go all-out in this final fortnight to help support a wealth of off-timetable opportunities.
Prize-Giving is taking shape in the heat haze of the horizon, heralding the good ship ‘Holidays’, and with that ceremony comes another expression of rightful pride. It is a day to celebrate excellence - not only the prizes awarded, but the effort, perseverance and kindness that can often go unseen.
So, as we stride toward the summer holidays, we must try to pause and savour these moments. We are tired, yes. But we are also fulfilled. And we are, quite properly, proud.
I look forward to seeing many of you over the coming week, whether at Prize-Giving or, beforehand, at the art and design exhibition, the Summer Concerts, Athletics Finals, or simply at the Yard gates - perhaps already clutching your copy of your summer holiday plans, or dreaming of somewhere far from a piece of prep.
