Year 4 Visit from Wessex Rivers Trust

We had a wonderful afternoon learning about river-life on our own river bank in our school grounds. Thank you Wessex Rivers Trust!

On a Wednesday afternoon at the end of last term, Ross and Dave - from the Wessex Rivers Trust - came to Pilgrims’ to lead a session about rivers with Year 4.

First, we conducted a chalk experiment where we put chalk in a bucket and watched as bubbles came out. We quickly moved on to fish in the river and Ross told us about the brown trout that lives there. We learnt all about its camouflage and teeth.

After that, we checked the speed of the river by dropping dog biscuits into the water and seeing how long they took to float downstream - this was great fun! Then, we handed down some nets to Dave and Ross in waders, who gently scooped up some plants and wildlife from the bottom of the riverbed for us to examine. We enjoyed identifying and sorting the wildlife, like Mayfly Nymphs, and we all got excited when we found a Bullhead fish.

Some of us also put our waders on and walked upstream! We had a brilliant time, learning about the river and working together.
