Year 5 enrichment

Last Tuesday, Year 5 attended an Enrichment Event at Winchester College. The event is offered by the College to primary school pupils, and we were delighted to participate.
After being split into two groups, the pupils attended three workshops. The first challenged them to build 3D shapes and calculate the number of edges, vertices and faces, while developing their understanding of the formulas involved. It was a highly interactive session in which every pupil was actively engaged, and all enjoyed building, investigating and working collaboratively in small groups.
The second session took place in the Treasury. Here, the boys were shown Anglo-Saxon documents and artefacts, which were also read aloud to them. Once again, they participated enthusiastically, drawing on their prior knowledge, much to Mr Duncan’s delight, to provide thoughtful answers and ask equally perceptive questions. The discussion touched not only on historical events but also on the ways in which they were recorded.
The final workshop took the boys to the new gym, where our intrepid Pilgrims, following a fun warm-up session, embraced the challenge of the climbing wall under the expert guidance of the College team.
Having successfully dodged the bursts of rain that punctuated the morning, the boys then gathered in the wood-panelled College Dining Hall for lunch, joining the Scholars, among whom we recognised many Old Pilgrims.
Our thanks go to all the Winchester College staff who organised the event and led the workshops. The boys certainly enjoyed their time there, as did Mr Duncan, Mr Greenwood and Mrs Brill.
