Year 7 River Ecology

Previous
Next

The Year 7s are currently studying ecosystems and ecology. Fortunately, having a tributary of the Itchen running through the school...

... provides us with an ecosystem with a plethora of biodiversity to explore and study. Boys have been using kick nets to sample the water and collect various invertebrates and, on occasion, a small fish or two. They have been using dichotomous keys to classify and identify species. From this, boys can then look at species adaptations to get a better understanding of the ecosystem and the various ecological relationships that exist between the various species. We have also been able to test the water flow rate with some distance time calculations.
