The Golden Rule

is kindness to others.

When a lawyer asked Jesus what was the most important commandment in the law, Jesus replied with two, ‘love God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. And love your neighbour as yourself’ (cf. Matt 22.34 – 40).

In this week’s Cathedral Assembly, Ms Lucy Holy presented the boys with an excellent teaching on the Golden Rule, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ or as it is also known, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do to you’ (cf. Luke 6.31).  Lucy used lessons from Paddington Bear’s prison time to explore the teaching in a fun context.

Paddington is in prison for a crime that he did not do. Even in prison though, he reminds himself to be well-mannered to everyone even though they might not be kind back.

He is given a job in the prison laundry. Unfortunately, he ends up dyeing all the prisoners’ uniforms pink. They are not very pleased and threaten to hurt Paddington.

How do you like to be treated – in the way that Paddington treats people or in the way that Knuckles and the other prisoners do?

The boys were definitely on Paddington’s side in this and discussed the many ways they could be kind to one another and treat each other in ways that they would like to be treated.
