6X visit Winchester College Treasury

The Treasury at Winchester College is a little gem worth exploring. We are lucky to have it at our doorstep and that not only our pupils, but their families can visit too.

In fact, the Treasury is open to the general public every day from 2pm to 4pm and entry is free.

Our pupils, however, had the place all to themselves and were able to use both floors of this lovely venue. Mrs Suzanne Ceirogh-Hughes, the Treasury Manager, had arranged a variety of Roman artifacts for the boys to observe closely. An interesting array of suggestions were put forward in each session as to what the possible use of an object could be. Keys, hooks and needles were easily identifiable, but what about the little round thing? Could it really be a precursor of the modern favourite toy: Beyblades?

Our boys were definitely behind the idea and Mrs Ceirogh-Hughes was intrigued but more inclined to think the object was a boss, instead. Of course, it remains a mystery.

Other objects tickled the curiosity of our budding Classicists, such an unusually shaped tong and a beautifully shaped brooch.

Boys were able to guess the use of some of the items and to relate them to modern ones, too, admiring the ingenuity of the makers and feeling more able to relate to their ancestors in some aspects of their daily life.

While focusing on ancient history, this was the chance to share some scientific and artistic knowledge. Mr Tanna and I were delighted with the ideas and comments that the boys volunteered, and we look forward to making use of all that has been learnt in our visits in our lessons.

Thank you to Mr Tanna, Mrs Goddard and Mrs Slater for accompanying us to this lovely venue.
