Year 5 visit to Butser Farm

The sun shone brightly all day for the annual Year 5 trip to Butser Ancient Farm. Life for the Iron Age settlers, Romano-Britons and Anglo-Saxons seemed pleasant and fun as a result!
Our guide, Adrian, treated us to an immersive experience, firstly in the gloom of an Iron Age roundhouse, where we learned all about tools and lifestyle, and were taught to make rope from dried grass. Having all managed to start a fire from flint, we enjoyed a picnic in the Roman kitchen garden, and learned ‘Sin, Dex’ Roman marching skills. Teddy J and Tristan got to sit on a Roman loo together outside the Roman villa, and we learned that although a Roman villa might look more glamourous and modern than a Saxon dwelling, the latter would certainly be preferable in the winter months! Year 5 legionaries were charged with building a tower from flint, a job which most soldiers had to complete daily after a long march.
A great time was had by all, and when asked to sum up the day in three words, ‘informative, smoky and fun’ was the conclusion. Thank you to Mr Duncan and Ms Carpenter for driving the minibuses, and to Adrian for his energetic and highly entertaining teaching!
