Year 6 D&T: Metal Work

Our Year 6 boys have been busy channelling their inner engineers this term, trading pens for files as they took on the Metal Keyring Project. It has been a fantastic display of patience, grit, and fine craftsmanship.
The journey began with a simple, raw rectangular blank of either aluminium or brass. From that humble starting point, the boys navigated a rigorous manufacturing process to create something truly professional:
- Precision Cutting: Using junior hacksaws, the boys carefully removed excess material to define their unique shapes.
- Refining the Form: Through disciplined filing, they smoothed out edges and perfected their silhouettes.
- The Science of Shine: Using various grades of silicon carbide paper, the boys mastered the art of abrading; a process of constant refinement to remove every last scratch.
- Polished to Perfection: The final stage saw the dull metal transformed into a gleaming, mirror-finish accessory.
The transformation has been remarkable. Not only have the boys gained a real appreciation for the patience required to turn a raw industrial material into a high-quality product, but they have also produced work of an exceptionally high standard.
While the boys are eager to show them off, these pieces are being kept safe for now; we look forward to displaying them in all their glory at the school exhibition later in the year.
