A Ceremony of Carols

Last Thursday evening, the Q’s choir gave an enchanting performance of Benjamin Britten’s 'Ceremony of Carols', their annual tradition of resplendent musicality.

As a seasoned reviewer of the Q’s, I usually take notes during performances. However, this particular concert entranced me so deeply that I completely lost track of my usual practice! Thankfully, the memories of the evening remain vividly imprinted in my mind.

The event was masterfully conducted by Dónal McCann and skilfully accompanied by Hayley Wild, (photo above), one of London’s most well renowned harpists.

From the moment the choir entered the chapel, the audience was enveloped in an atmosphere rich with warmth and reverence. They processed in to the chapel singing "Hodie Christus natus est," drawing everyone into the sacred joy of the music.

Throughout the performance, the sheer passion and exuberance radiating from the boys was infectious, their song bursting forth with emotion and sincerity.

Soloists delivered some wonderful moments, showcasing not just their individual talents, but also their remarkable growth. It was particularly heartwarming to observe the blossoming confidence in the junior Q's, who conquered the challenging top notes. A standout moment came during “Balulalow,” when Henry SM let loose a powerful solo in the opening, filling the chapel with his clear, resonant voice. Following this was the triumphant “Deo Gracias,” performed with an energy so vibrant that it lifted the spirits of everyone present. Ivor L. and Casper H. shone brightly as they led the "Spring Carol," with Casper’s showcasing an effortlessly  beautiful natural vibrato.

A truly magical interlude featured a harp solo from Hayley Wild, whose delicate, dream-like melodies captivated all in attendance, so enchanting that one could almost hear a pin drop in the hushed chapel.

As the performance drew to a close, the choir’s voices resonated throughout the chapel as they processed out, slowly fading away to silence. Overall, the concert was a jubilant and uplifting experience, precisely the remedy needed to illuminate a dreary January evening with joy and hope.

When they returned for the final bow, the audience erupted into rapturous applause, a heartfelt tribute to a night filled with extraordinary talent and soul-stirring music.
