Year 7 visit to the Treasury

The Treasury at Winchester College is a little gem hidden just off College Street, beyond the Porter’s Lodge. Last week, it opened its doors to our Year 7 pupils, who were welcomed by Mr Lewis, Head of Classics at the College, and by Mr Chan and Mr Mercer.
This visit was planned to allow students an insight into Greek art and culture. For many of them the place was familiar, as in Year 6 we visited it to attend a workshop based on Roman artefacts.
This time, pupils were encouraged to examine closely a selection of ancient Greek vases. The boys were asked to consider why the pieces might have different colours or decorating styles, what their use could be and where they were found. Finally, they were invited to touch and handle the vases: an amazing opportunity considering that the oldest one was dated 750BC.
During the visit, Mr Lewis offered a tour of the Treasury, pointing the children towards the most interesting pieces in the displays, telling them about the history of the collection and sharing stories about some particular items. The boys asked some good questions, and hopefully will feel inspired to visit the Treasury again and other museums too, during the forthcoming breaks.
We are thankful to Mr Lewis, Mr Chan and Mr Mercer for sharing their knowledge and their enthusiasm, as well as the amazing resources of the Treasury, with our Year 7 pupils.
For those who would like to visit this very special place, the Treasury is open to the public in the afternoon and more information can be found on https://www.winchestercollegeheritage.org/treasury/
