Years 3, 4 and 5 Production: Romeo and Juliet

This week saw the performances of what has now become a bit of a Pilgrims’ fixture in February – a ‘Powerful Shakespearean parody, performed by Years 3, 4 and 5.
This year, it was the turn of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to get the full Mr Power treatment. The Pilgrims’ Hall became the mean streets of Verona, with Year 4 opening proceedings with a dance-off, (thank you very much Mrs Hudson-Patino for choreographing), and the boys impressed with some ‘Montague Mega-moves’ and ‘Capulet cool-crew choreography’. They also shared some of their home-made Shakespearean insults with us, Will O’K’s ‘giddy-brained lack-worm’ being a particular favourite.
As usual, the play was double-cast, ensuring that all Year 5 boys had a chance to play major roles, with 5Y performing on Tuesday and 5X on Wednesday. Both casts did a fantastic job. Particular fun was had by those playing the female characters, with lots of amusing hair-tossing and posturing from Felix M and Tom L-H as Juliet. Franklin C and Henry S were the perfect foil for them as Romeo, with Franklin cleverly using his crutch as a weapon instead of a sword! Finn McC and Edward W as Escalus brought lots of charisma to the role, and lots of comedy came from the Nurse (Teddy J and Inigo E), Rosalina (William McC and Darcy C). Mercutio (Teddy W and Aarav I) and Tybalt (Tristan G and William S) had a daring swordfight and impressively dramatic deaths. Other notable portrayals included Lady Capulet, (Samuel B and Kabir T), Lady Montague (Xavier H and Oliver E), Lord Capulet (Leo J) and Frere Jacques (Louis L).
Year 3 came up with their own original scene involving the waking of Frère Jacques, and they treated us to a rendition of the French nursery rhyme of the same name. We have some talented dancers from Year 3 coming up, which is very exciting!
Music was specifically chosen that had some connection to previous versions of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, so Elton John, Prince and Prokofiev were all represented! Thanks go to Ms Willcocks and Mr du Plessis for their wonderful music direction, and to Mrs Brill and Mrs Hunter for their support on the performance nights.
