Year 6 trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace

Year 6 visited the Roman Palace at Fishbourne and had a wonderful, hands-on learning experience.

The sun shone on the day of our trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace and what a lovely day it was! Having booked the resort’s dining area for lunch and set off with coats to ward off the cool temperatures of the unheated Palace – the underfloor Roman heating was never used – we ended up having lunch outdoors, enjoying the warm gentle sun, blue sky and quiet surroundings.

Inside the Palace, the Museum and in the workshop room, however, things were less quiet. Plenty of chatting, pointing of displays, observation of the mosaic floors, exploration of the garden, dressing up and hands-on activities offered our pupils the chance to apply their history knowledge earned in previous years and imagine more clearly the stories and the world of the characters in our Latin workbook.

Many of the boys were able to make connections with what they also learnt during our visit to the Treasury last term and through personal experiences. Hopefully, the fast-approaching Easter holiday will provide opportunities to explore museums or sites in the UK or perhaps further away to continue to inspire our budding Latinists.

Many thanks to Mr Townend, Mrs Duncan and Miss Keen for accompanying our group.
