Quiristers’ Instrumental Concert

On Sunday, March 1, following the Eucharist service, parents gathered at Music school for another much-anticipated Quiristers’ Instrumental Concert.

Performing in front of people they know is not easy, especially for those appearing for the first time. A few of the boys were new to performing in this setting, and there were understandably some nervous faces at the beginning. It was wonderful to see every performer complete his piece with determination and growing confidence. The encouragement in the room was strong, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of each performance was clear to see.

The program was impressively full, with eighteen pieces performed across a wide range of instruments. Alongside many piano performances, we heard trumpet, cello, clarinet, oboe, double bass, guitar, and xylophone — a wonderful reflection of the boys’ varied musical studies. Several performed from memory, showing growing confidence and musical maturity. The progress since the previous concert was clear, with more attention to dynamics, steadier rhythm, and a stronger stage presence.

Among the stand-out performances, Riko Kato’s guitar performance of Amontillado by Cottam impressed with thoughtful phrasing and a warm tone, while Will Wang’s interpretation of J.S. Bach’s Sonata in E minor (Adagio & Allegro) demonstrated expressive phrasing and well-shaped dynamics. Ivor Lam’s performance of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor showed steady rhythm and clear musical structure, and Henry Sergison-Main’s xylophone performance of On the Breeze by Faulkner brought infectious energy, encouraging even the audience to move along with the rhythm.

Whether just beginning their instrumental journey or already performing at a high level, every Quirister showed courage, commitment, and love for music. The improvement since we last heard them was evident, and each boy should feel proud of his progress.

Very well done, boys!
