Year 8 History trip to Corfe Castle

Our recent visit to Corfe Castle provided a perfect conclusion to an intense week of examinations.

The boys were able to unwind by climbing around this fantastic example of a Norman castle, situated on its natural motte, and running down the steep slopes! It was also a lovely way to mark the end of their time in prep school as seniors, especially since it began at a castle. It feels like a long time ago when Mr. Duncan and I introduced these boys to Falaise Castle in Normandy and how these boys have grown!

The guides at Corfe Castle praised the boys for their knowledge of history, ranging from monarchs to castle design, and I was proud of their behaviour and the insightful questions they asked. They listened attentively to stories about garderobes, oubliettes, sieges, and treachery, spanning from William I to Charles II.

Over the past three years, we've been studying these historical events in our classroom. It’s been wonderful to enhance their understanding and revision by exploring the very places where these rulers once walked.

Since our trip, Year 8 has been using fieldwork to prepare for a potential examination question. I encourage you to discuss with your son the arguments about the benefits and limitations of historical sites for historians. This trip would not have been possible without the support of the school staff. I would like to extend my thanks to the school kitchen, Mr Duncan, Ms Willcocks, and Mr Seery for their efforts in making this field trip enjoyable and productive.
