Athletics Nationals, Birmingham

Last Wednesday, Alexander W (Javelin), Luca B (Shot Put) and Tristan G (600m) travelled to Birmingham to compete in the 52nd NPSA Championships, held at the Alexander Stadium.

Tristan G, who was competing in the year group above was placed in Heat 3, with the other fastest regional 600m runners. The race got out to an quick start with Tristan battling for position on the inside of lane 1. A 'box' formed around him, forcing Tristan to look at other avenues to advance forward and make up the distance to the front runners. After 100m, gaps began to appear and Tristan set to the job of catching the leaders. He held his pace well, closing down the gap. The extra energy used to make up the distance made pushing to take 3rd difficult. Tristan finished in 5th. Overall, he finished 10th out of 30 runners. The future is bright for Tristan and all of us at Pilgrims' look forward to what he will achieve in the future.

Luca B was up next in the U12 Shot Put. This was an interesting one for Luca as he had some experience in Shot Put through PE but had never really trained for the event. He came 2nd at regionals and both he and the winner were miles ahead of the rest. Luckily, Pilgrims' were able to have Luca (and Alexander) attend a training session with throws coach (and British Javelin Champion) Freya Jones, Monday of the competition. Freya was invaluable, giving Luca a few tools to add to his natural ability. Luca went on to come 5th and create a hunger for what could be achieved next year. Also look out for Luca in the 200m next year. He missed out on going to Nationals with the smallest of margins, and now that he has the knowledge and confidence in his ability, the rest of the field should be shaking in their spikes!

Alexander W is an established Javelin thrower whose technique at this young age has to be admired. Having thrown a personal best at regionals, and winning the event by a good 10m, Alexander knew anything could be achieved on the day. The event's javelin was 100g heavier than at regionals, but that didn't stop Alexander throwing another personal best (with the 55g) of 30.26m! If you have not seen Alexander throw, please put it on your to do list!

What is truly exciting is that all 3 boys will have an opportunity to do it all again next year, and for Tristan, he will do it in his correct age group. Well done boys!
