St Luke's Church in Chelsea was the setting for this year's Christmas charity event.

On December 16, 2025, the warm glow of candlelight filled St Luke’s Church in Chelsea as the Winchester College Chapel Choir and its renowned Quiristers delivered an enchanting performance in support of the Alice Martineau Appeal for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Now in its 23rd year, the Carols by Candlelight concert has become a cherished tradition, raising more than £2.25 million to date for the fight against cystic fibrosis.

The appeal was founded in the early 2000s by the family of Alice Martineau, a gifted singer-songwriter who tragically died from the disease at just 30. Each December, the event draws loyal supporters and distinguished guests to St Luke’s, eager to hear the soaring harmonies of the Winchester choir and enjoy readings from celebrated actors.

This year’s lineup featured Jenny Agutter, beloved for her role as Sister Julienne in Call the Midwife; David Haig, known for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Downton Abbey; and Synnove Karlsen, recently acclaimed for her performance in Foundation. Their evocative readings of seasonal poetry added depth and drama to the evening’s festivities.

The choir’s program blended timeless carols with contemporary seasonal works, showcasing its versatility and artistry. From the opening strains of Once in Royal David’s City, led by Will Wang’s striking solo, to the triumphant finale of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, the performance radiated precision, warmth, and joy. The Quiristers’ crystalline treble lines soared above the rich tones of the back row singers, while the audience joined in for beloved congregational carols.

Beyond the music, the evening carried a profound sense of purpose. Each note underscored the urgent mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the enduring legacy of Alice Martineau. As candles flickered and voices rose in harmony, the event reaffirmed its place as a highlight of the festive season—a night where art and altruism meet, leaving all in attendance uplifted and inspired.
