Senior Wessex Athletics

Last week, on a cold and stormy day, Pilgrims' took a team of Year 6, 7 and 8 athletes to compete in the Senior Wessex Athletics Championships at King Park Stadium, Bournemouth.
The winners of each event will qualify for the National Championships in Birmingham on the 1st of July.
Each Pilgrims' competitor represented themselves and their school with heart, putting their best effort towards each event. The Year 6 relay team of Bertie L, George B, Baxter NB and Steven H were a mere moment away from making the final after they finished 9th in 3 heats by .009!
Luca B who competed in the Year 7 100m, 200m and Shot Put announced himself to the athletics world when he ran 2nd overall in the 200m heats, 3rd overall in the 100m heats and 2nd in the Shot Put. Luca B finished off the day with a 3rd in the 200m final and 4th in the 100m final. An outstanding effort!
Alexander W competed in the Year 7 Javelin. A heavy favourite coming into the competition, with Pilgrims' cheering him on, Alexander took his 3rd and final throw, a perfect example of throwing technique. As it left the hand you knew it was something special. Alexander went on to record a personal best of 32.14m, winning the event by 8m!
It's not often that we have boys compete outside their age group, but with no Year 5 category, we presented Tristan G with the opportunity to compete in the Year 6 600m. Tristan took hold of that opportunity with both hands. Tristan's attitude towards the race can be summed up by the interaction we had between warm up and the start of the race. Middle distance can be highly strategic, so even at his young age I asked Tristan, 'What do you need from me during the race'? He looked at the track, took a moment, and then said, 'Can you stand there (pointing at the 250m mark of the track) and yell out how far behind they are'... Tristan had absolute confidence in his plan. As the race started, he accelerated quickly, setting the pace. A group behind him scrambled, almost at a sprint, to keep up. As they rounded the 250m, I was up. '5......5'! And that was as close as the chasing pack ever came to him. Tristan pulled away with the chasers tiring one by one. He won the race, a sensational performance.
Well done to all the boys involved and thank you to the parents on hand for your support.
