On 13 June 2026, Winchester College celebrated Wykeham Day, an annual tradition to commemorate its founders by celebrating with a wide range of events and activities for the whole community to partake and enjoy.

The Choral Service led by Rev Dr Ben Sargent marked the beginning of this momentous day. The Chapel Choir and Quiristers, under the masterful direction by Donal McCann and brilliant accompaniment by Benjamin Cunningham, exhibited an absolutely superb performance all throughout the service.

The Chapel Choir and Quiristers filled the service with excellent music starting with a solemn and soulful rendition of the entrance hymn, Old Hundredth, followed by Venite by Hennry Smart and Psalm 68 by Edward Elgar.

One of the musical highlights of the service was the singing of Te Deum Laudamus by Charles Villiers Stanford where we witnessed the exquisite medley of voices of the Chapel Choir and Quiristers respectively and as one united voice performing at the highest level.

During the service, we listened to bible readings and prayers befitting this occasion. The First Lesson from Ecclesiastes 44:1:15 was read by Head Boy, Arthur Jamesduff, and the Second Lesson from 2 Timothy 4:1-8 by Headmaster, Elizabeth Stone. The Warden, Sir Richard Stagg KCMG, also delivered the Prayer for the Founder.

Towards the end of the service, it was nothing short of a grand finale as the Chapel Choir and Quiristers performed a very powerful and dramatic rendition of the Anthem followed by an exemplary delivery of the final Hymn.

Wykeham Day could not have started any better — a most fitting choral service for this significant day, with an exceptional choir that our founders and we could be truly proud of.
