Year 3 D&T field trip to Winchester Science Centre

Another week, another D&T field trip – this time a new venture for Year 3.

I have lived in Winchester all my life and have often wondered what resides in those dome-shaped buildings near the Percy Hobbs roundabout. Year 3 can tell you, quite a lot!

Our trip this morning started with a riveting talk (or lecture!) about the solar system in the wonderful planetarium which, as you can see from the photographs, gives participants the opportunity to really view and understand the night sky.  On both floors of the building there are many hands-on experiments which the boys loved playing with (and learning about!) many which focus on the science and technology we encounter in everyday items and tasks.

The trip finished off with a rocket building workshop giving the boys the chance to explore the concepts of aerodynamics and friction whilst designing their rockets, which were propelled by vapour from methylated spirits – very good fun indeed!  This was an immersive, educational, and particularly fun trip and special thanks to Mrs Richardson and Mrs Cadoux-Hudson for their assistance and to Year 3 for being so polite and engaging.
