Year 6 Scientists learn about fireworks

With Bonfire Night coming up next month, the boys were learning what makes fireworks the colours they are.
On 5 November each year there are often wonderful fireworks displays burning brightly across the country. We combined a little history around Guy Fawkes with some Science when our Year 6 boys learnt what creates the colour.
We set about testing the different metal compounds that display these beautiful colours. Metal ions such as copper, calcium, barium, sodium and potassium, when put in a hot flame, burn with the most captivating of colours.
Ask your boys to see if they've remembered which metal ions burn with which colours!
