The Spring Concert

Many congratulations to all the boys who performed in an impressive and varied evening of music-making in the final week of term.

First up was wind ensemble Partita, who took on two movements from a work - also entitled Partita - by Franz Krommer. This amounted to two movements from a full-blown symphony, and placed huge demands upon all players - not least of all in terms of stamina.

Sinfonia, their string counterpart, performed music by Purcell, Corelli and Mozart. The latter was something of a tour de force, and especial congratulations should also go to Jayden, Charlie, Tristan and Arthur, who took on the virtuosic semiquaver-laden solo parts in the Corelli.

Not to be outdone, the Orchestra immediately launched into a brisk and terrifically exciting rendition of the March from Vaughan Williams' English Folksong Suite. The eerie third movement of Mahler's First Symphony followed, complete with klezmer-inspired woodwind writing and an opening scored for solo double bass (bravo, Alex!) and timpani - most definitely not usual prep school fare.

The concert concluded with themes from Jurassic Park, by John Williams. These strains - and the cheers that followed - must have been heard up and down Jewry Street!

We are extremely grateful to the United Church for making our use of their beautiful building so easy, and such a pleasure.
